Papal Delegate to the IEC will make a pilgrimage of Atonement to Lough Derg.

Archbishop Diarmuid Martin has announced that the Papal Legate to the International Eucharistic Congress is to travel to Co Donegal tomorrow on an overnight pilgrimage to the penitential island of Lough Derg.

The visit is regarded by observers as a further gesture of repentance by the Vatican to victims and survivors of child sexual abuse by priests and religious.

Diarmuid Martin announces Papal Legate’s Lough Derg pilgrimage

Last month, the Primate of All Ireland, Cardinal Seán Brady led a pilgrimage to the island in atonement for the abuse of children by priests and religious.

The Cardinal was accompanied throughout the overnight cycle of prayer by a number of his fellow-bishops from the north of the country.

Approximately 200 lay pilgrims also joined the pilgrimage.

Dr Martin announced that Cardinal Marc Ouellet will begin his journey north following a scheduled morning visit to President Higgins at Áras an Uachtaráin.

The Archbishop also revealed that Cardinal Ouellet will travel on Saturday to the Marian Shrine at Knock in County Mayo.

Saturday has been devoted by the Congress to Mary the Mother of God, who is described in the official programme as the “Hearer of the Word” par excellence.

Knock is renowned for attracting pilgrimages by the sick and dying and by their families.

It was Blessed John Paul II’s principle destination during his Papal visit to Ireland in 1979.

“The visit is regarded by observers as a further gesture of repentance by the Vatican to victims and survivors of child sexual abuse by priests and religious.”

…which, if this “observer” is correct, almost certainly means that no actual word of repentence will officially uttered.
    Quite right, too.

Everybody else does it too – why single us out?
We’re no worse than Atheists! Hurrah!

Nothing can undo the dreadful harm done to these innocent victims, but remorse and a desire to make amends for these terrible sins of child abuse by this Papal Delegate (who were not themselves the perpetrators of the crimes) is at least a sign of humility and genuine sorrow.

‘Observers’, who scoff and deride this gesture of repentance, show an amazing lack of empathy.

What I’m suggesting, Kathleen, is that – from the wording of the announcement – no statement of repentence will be uttered.
I hope I’m wrong on this, and may well be.
    We shall see.
And I trust you are not accusing me of scoffing and deriding. (in this case.)

I know that the media world only remembers what is in the press that day, Toad, but surely you recall that we’ve already had a detailed statement, apology and act of repentance from the Holy Father himself.

How often do you want the poor man to apologise for the failings of other people thirty years ago?

Now look here, Raven. I have no complaints about Benedict whatsoever, no matter what his butler says.
Nor do I repine about the Papal Legate pilgrimming to Loch Derg, “to atone.” I just wonder if he will announce why he’s doing it.
However, you are quite right. It doesn’t really matter a monkey’s patootie whether he does or not.

Toad will duly consign this topic, along with anullment, to the flames. Then maybe Raven will stop persecuting him, for his lurid media past. (insert smiley face.)

Sorry Raven, can’t open the link.

I just changed the first letter, a capital ‘H’ to a small key ‘h’, and you can now open Raven’s link Toad :-) .

    Many thanks Kathleen.
Well, Cardinal Ouellet did indeed speak out, loudly and clearly. Good for him.
And apparently, no mention of, “Although it was only a small minority, etc” Very wise of him. Thinks Toad.
