No news at the completion of talks by SSPX at Albano

The following is a translation from http://la-croix.com of the conclusion of the talks in Albano with the SSPX. Whilst my French leaves much to be desired, I hope you will forgive any grammatical mistakes – the full text (in French) may be read clicking on the above.

Reconciliation with Rome is related to the acceptance of the “Preamble Document”

On Saturday, October 8 the higher the Society of St. Pius X announce whether or not they accept the conditions for reintegration into  the Church as it is recognizable under the Pope Benedict XVI and in accordance with official documents of Vatican II .. Indeed, a “working meeting” was held Saturday in camera at Albano, near Rome, bringing together the directors of seminaries, heirachies and districts of the fraternity that recognize itThe movement was founded Mgr Marcel Lefebvre, who, raising himself to the rank of Bishop had been the cause of the fundamentalistschism. From the meeting at Albano, it appears that a “comprehensive review … will  be presented within a reasonable time a Roman response to the proposals.” These “proposals” submitted in mid-September by the Holy See are designed to encourage members of the Society of St. Pius X to accept, on behalf of the unity of the Church, the main principles of Catholic doctrine, including the directions taken in the field of ecumenism and liturgy, for example whilst remaining faithful to Archbishop Lefebvre.

While it was expected that the working meeting of the Society was to last until the end of the day. it  was , in fact, much shorter, and concluded with the publication of a Press Release that does not imply that a change in attitude is in any way imminent.  According to this press release, “the twenty-eight … officials present expressed a deep unity in the desire to maintain faith in its integrity and completeness, true to the lesson inherited from their founder Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre. On  Sept. 14, the Vatican had submitted  proposals for the possibility of a” legitimate discussion “about the study of certain” special formulations “of Vatican II. Which was a huge concession to the Brotherhood. Will it seize this opportunity for reconciliation? For now, nothing is certain. Many Catholics, faithful to the Church, wonder if it was practical to go as far as  to attempt a reconciliation, noting angrily that Lefebvrists have not shown any wish to rush into an early reconciliation.

On October 7, 2011, a meeting of all those in charge of the Society of St Pius X was held in Albano, Italy, during which the Superior General, H. E. Bishop Bernard Fellay, presented the content of the Doctrinal Preamble, handed over to him by Cardinal William Levada, Prefect of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith, at the Vatican, during last September 14 meeting.

During this day, the twenty-eight persons in charge of the Society of St Pius X present at the meeting – seminary rectors, district superiors from all over the world – manifested a profound unity in their will to maintain the Faith in its integrity and its fullness, faithful to the lesson which Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre left them, according to St Paul’s “Tradidi quod et accepi – I have handed over what I myself have received” (I Cor 15:3).

Following this work meeting, the study of the Doctrinal Preamble – of which the content still remains confidential – will be pursued and further analysed at the level of the General Counsel of the Society of St Pius X, by the Superior General and his two Assistants, Frs. Niklaus Pfluger and Alain Nely, enabling them to present an answer to the Roman proposals in a reasonable time.

  2. There is now (1000 PST, which must be 1800 or so in your part of the world) this article at La Croix, by Frédéric Mounier http://bit.ly/qX77AU; whether that was the version on the site when you did your work, I’m not sure.

May I point out that FM clarifies that the Albano weekend had originally been scheduled to deal with the subject ‘How do we deal with the media’; the ‘Doctrinal Preamble’ became the topic after the Holy Cross Day meeting at the Holy See– in other words, the fact that the subject matter was, from the participants’ point of view, sufficiently dealt with on the one day, and the second day cancelled, says nothing at all about the reception of the ‘Doctrinal Preamble’ by the authorities of the SSPX.

Thank you both for your comments, I read this piece on la-Croix last night, and I guessed there would be a translation somewhere sometime today, and did in fact hesitate posting because of my inadequate French. I believe it might be some time before a response to the Doctrinal Preamble is formulated, though I was not aware that the Albano weekend was conceived mainly on dealing with the media. As the saying goes…. interesting times.

I’m extremely annoyed with the paywall that La Croix instituted earlier on this year, it has made their website far less of a reliable, easy, and useful resource than it used to be …

  5. I don’t look at la Croix as often as I should, evidently, because while I knew that the paywall had been instituted (the key symbol), it doesn’t, e.g., seem to prevent access y e t to the Mounier piece.

I seem, this morning, to be able to access both of the articles published over the weekend.

Fellay continues to represent SSPX as being more Catholic than the Pope, as the saying goes, which is not exactly helpful…
