Bibles are ‘homophobic’, Scots police are told

From the Christian Institue
Scottish police forces have been told not to accept a gift of free Bibles from the Gideons because the book “condemns homosexuality”.

The Bibles have been offered to Scottish police forces featuring each force’s badge.

But the Gay Police Association (GPA) is against the move, and has issued a statement demanding that the forces refuse to be involved.

In the past, the GPA has been in trouble with the authorities for making untruthful and misleading claims involving the Bible.

In 2006 the group was reprimanded for producing an ad featuring the Bible next to a pool of blood with the headline “in the name of the father”.

The ad blamed religion, focusing in particular on Christianity, for violent attacks against homosexuals.

But the Advertising Standards Authority ruled that the ad was untrue, indecent and unsubstantiated.

Trade union UNISON has joined with the GPA in opposing the offer of free Bibles for Scottish police forces.

Gideons say they want to offer Scottish police the Bibles as a “valuable guide to life”.

The group said they “can be offered to all members of the individual force, both serving police officers and civilian staff”.

But the GPA said in a statement: “Members of the GPA have contacted us expressing concern that their Force is officially endorsing a religious book containing text which condemns homosexuality.”

It added: “The GPA does not feel that a public service, such as the police, should be seen to be endorsing, by their active involvement, any particular religion over and above any other religion or non-religion.”

The GPA said if the Bibles were to be offered, “surely this can be done without the actual involvement of the police force concerned”.

UNISON commented: “It is not the role of a Police Force either to provide official endorsement of any religion or foist religious views on its staff.”

The trade union added that it hoped police forces in Scotland would “reject” the offer.

And there have been so many attempts to deny that the Bible condemns homosexuality. The words ‘own goal’ spring to mind.

  2. toadspittle says:

..And we’ll not tolerate any silly jokes about kilts, either.

“The words ‘own goal’ spring to mind.” says Marje.
They weren’t quite the words that sprang to Toad’s mind.
Still, less said, soonest mended,</i< as Pope Benedict frequently tells the Faithful.

  3. JabbaPapa says:

The Biblical condemnations of homosexuality are scarce indeed.

It is only ever mentioned in passing, and receives far less Biblical attention than very many more serious sins.

  4. Marjorie Sessions says:

Don’t you mean LESS serious sins: this is before the days of ‘gay’ marriage! Every condemnation of fornication is also a condemnation of ‘unnatural relations’.

  5. JabbaPapa says:

Murder, irreligion, theft, adultery, and so on (it’s a long list) are worse sins than homosexuality.

  6. toadspittle says:

“Every condemnation of fornication is also a condemnation of ‘unnatural relations’.”

Spot on Marge. And anyone who ever met my Uncle Ernie would agree.
They didn’t come much more unnatural than him. Particularly when it came to fornicating.

  7. toadspittle says:

What Jabba is, I think, suggesting, is that some actions (sins, if you like) are less egregious than others.
I fully agree, but it’s practically, relatively, heresy on here.

(Toad’s solomonic advice to the Hibernian Guardians of the Law: Take the Bibles, say “Och, Thanks, Wee Laddie,” and chuck ’em in the Clyde.)

  8. The Raven says:

I think most people are aware that there are gradations in sin (there is the old distinction between venal and mortal sin, for example).

  9. kathleen says:

To be homosexual, i.e. homosexuality in itself, is not sinful. It is the homosexual acts that are sinful.

I don’t know if I agree with you Jabba, that other sins are ‘worse’ than the sin of sodomy. No offense meant, but that surely is not for us to judge.

Quite a few quotes from the Bible here showing the sinfulness of sodomy:

In agreement with Cath O’Leen again! Twice in one morning. The Apocalypse is nigh.
What I’d like to know, after reading her link, is where they get the energy.

(Got to get cleaned up for Mass now. A lengthy process.)

  11. Maria says:

the Bible does not condemn the sinner, but the sin, that is homosexual lifestyle is gravely immoral and endangers a soul to being lost to Heaven for eternity.Bible only warns us of the consequences of sin…

  12. marj sessions says:

Would the GPA have dared to ban the Koran – had that text been on offer?

  13. toadspittle says:

Surely, Marj, we aren’t going to get all bent out of shape over whether gay Scottish policemen should ban the Koran, or not? Where will it all end? It’ll be The Book of Mormon next.

None of our business! Leave the Muslims to pick the bones out of that!

We’ve got enough problems already, what with pedophile priests, and people talking communion standing on their heads, and all!

(Mind you, gay Scottish policemen can be quite daring, or so I’m told.)

  14. marj sessions says:

The point is that political correctness protects some things – but you can condemn Christianity with impunity – and people do – in the press – all the time.
