Novena for the election of the Sovereign Pontiff – March 2013 (1st to 9th)

From the Society of St. Pius X

In preparation for the upcoming election of a new Sovereign Pontiff, Bishop Bernard Fellay, Superior General of the Society of Saint Pius X, requests that all priests and faithful beseech heavenly graces by a novena of prayers to take place from March 1st to the ninth.  The novena will consist of the Veni Creator Spiritus, the collect of the votive Mass for the election of a Sovereign Pontiff, and three invocations.  So that all may participate in this novena, the prayers are :

Veni Creator Spiritus

Come, Holy Ghost, Creator, come. From thy bright heavenly throne! Come, take possession of our souls. And make them all Thine Own!
Thou who art called the Paraclete, Best gift of God above, The Living Spring, The Living Fire, Sweet Unction, and True Love!
Thou who are sevenfold in Thy grace, Finger of God’s right hand,
His Promise, teaching little ones
To speak and understand!
O guide our minds with thy blest light, With love our hearts inflame, And with thy strength, which ne’er decays, Confirm our mortal frame.
Far from us drive our hellish foe, True peace unto us bring, And through all perils guide us safe Beneath thy sacred wing.
Through Thee may we the Father know, Through Thee the Eternal Son, And Thee the Spirit of them both Thrice blessed Three in One.
Now to the Father, and the Son Who rose from death, be glory given, With Thee, O holy Comforter, Henceforth by all in earth and heaven. Amen.
V/ Send forth Thy Spirit, and they shall be created:
R/ An Thou shalt renew the face of the earth.

The collect of the Missal for the election of a Pope

O Lord, with suppliant humility, we entreat Thee, that in Thy boundless mercy Thou wouldst grant the most holy Roman Church a pontiff, who by his zeal for us, may be pleasing to Thee, and by his good government may ever be honoured by Thy people for the glory of Thy name. Through Our Lord Jesus Christ.
V/ Most Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary,
R/ pray for us who have recourse to Thee!
V/ Saint Pie V.
R/ pray for us.
V/ Saint Pie X.
R/ pray for us.

Our National Anthem, composed by Charles Gounod, first performed in 1869 and officially adopted in 1949. Wish I could locate a good choral version

Watching that video, I noticed for the first time that our occasional contributor (and faithful, but eldritch, ally) is immortalized at the entrance to Saint John Lateran: SACROS LATERAN ECCLES OMNIUM URBIS ET ORBIS ECCLESIARUM MATER ET CAPUT; but I take it that he chose his blog name from an old BBC program rather than from this basilica, no?

H’mm. Not exactly the Mormon Tabernacle Choir ;D
…but I doubt the MTC will ever sing anything honouring the Bishop of Rome.
Gounod’s composition is also the musical setting for Yutang Tabunon (Beloved Land), sung in your neck of the woods, or soon will be if the Royal Army of the Sultanate of Sulu has its way.

Oh, my poor ears !! But fantastic choreography, Golden. Better than the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders half-time show.

I think I should apologise to Gertrude for being a tad too frivolous on what is meant as a serious post. I shall mind my manners better in future. Or try to.

johnhenry, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, eh? Will this Italian version do instead?

How about this version in the original Latin with a built-in sing-along feature?

Actually, the hymn of the Pontifical Lateran University is rather good too.

    Praise to You, Eternal Wisdom!

The official anthem of the Pontifical University (above) – translation by Golden:

Cristo nostra Sapienza, seme di speranza,
    Specchio dell’Amore, fonte inesauribile,
Splendi come lampada luce di verità!

(Christ our Wisdom, seed of hope,
    Mirror of Love, inexhaustible fount,
Shine like a lamp the light of truth!)

    Tu, Sapienza radiosa, desiderio santo,,
Nella città eterna di pontefici e santi
fondasti un tempio nobile di sapere e verità.

(You, radiant Wisdom, [our] holy desire,
In the eternal city of popes and saints
founded a noble temple of knowledge and truth.)

Germe di concoscenza, rendici saggi discepoli
Come guide sapienti sulle orme dei Padri.

(Seed of knowledge, make us knowing disciples
like wise guides in the footsteps of the Fathers.)

Tu ci hai convocati qui da tutto il mondo
Per studiare insieme, per conoscere il Vero
    Nella Pontificia Università.

(You have called us together here from all the world
To study together, to know the Truth
    In the Pontifical University.)

Forti nella Ragione, saldi nella Fede,
Insegnanti e studenti a Te, Dio, ci affidiamo.
Fa’ di noi maestri della Tua Verita.

    Lode a Te, Sapienza Eterna!

(Strong in Reason, firm in Faith,
We, teachers and students, entrust ourselves to You. O God.
Make of us teachers of Your Truth.

    Praise to You, Eternal Wisdom!)

But still not as good as the winners in 2008 (remember, johnhenry?), I feel.

I apologise if any CP&Sers feel we are being irreverent but the Sinulog Festival is celebrated in the city of Cebu in the Philippines in commemoration of the evangelisation of the Philippines and is held just after Epihanytide on the third Sunday of January. A certain statue of the Holy Infant (el Santo Niño) is inseparable from the beginnings of the conversion of the Philippine peoples.

If the Spanish had arrived a tiny bit later the Philippines would probably be an Islamic region today.

GC, you certainly were not being irreverent. It was I who, trying to be clever, forgot the intent of this post on March 1st at 20:52.
