Food: there’s lots of it

One of the main causes of world hunger is often believed to be the overpopulation of the planet. Mankind has indeed increased dramatically in numbers over the last two centuries, and poverty is still a major cause for concern. Those of us who believe in the sanctity of life, and the Catholic Church’s teaching that contraception and abortion are sinful, are often demonised as being part of the problem.

But is it really true that “more men, equals, less food”?

    Food? There’s lots of it!
How wonderfully true, we all say, as we let another inch out of our waist-bands after lunch!
I thought that very same thing today, as I scoffed my lobster thermidor.
Turned down a second helping, in fact. Noble Toad.

It’s obvious to the meanest intelligence (Toad’s, of course) that the problem is not how much ‘food’ there is available, but who gets to eat it – and where, and how. and why in fact.
    And who doesn’t.

Anyway – back to the headline – being aware that there is – in theory at least – more than enough food for everybody in the world, is of little help to those who currently perishing of starvation.
The knowledge that, say, Rabit, has a loverly bunch of coconuts at his disposal in Benidorm is of little comfort to us in Castilla-Leon, where we are frequently forced to live on nothing but food and water.

This is all inane, no doubt – but the very idea of being to console ourselves that there is really lots of food around, if only you can afford it – or you can somehow get your hands on it – is rather a depressing one. Or so it it seems to me.
The world on the whole may not be technically ”overpopulated,” but any place on it where there is not enough to sustain life is.
Remember Ireland in the early 1800’s
How would our airy declaration that, ”There’s lots of food .” ,,gone down with the Irish then?
    Not well.
Or so it seems to me.
And there are an increasing number of those unhappy places each day..
    It’s all relative, in fact.
    Like everything.

The ”liberal” idea – that if there were fewer people around, the others might live less unpleasant lives, is not to be given serious credence.
    Naturally.
How could anyone ‘prove’ such a preposterous notion?

In my experience, people who employ contraception, and even abortion, don’t do it because they are worried about world overpopulation,

They just don’t want any (or at least any more) kids themselves.
But I might be wrong. Takes all sorts.

I am mystified by this video. Who is it responding to? The “population explosion” panic ceased to be an issue a few years ago, when it was generally accepted that population will decrease after 2050 instead of the wild projections once suggested. This is due to the general trend towards human development in the world, with highly populated NICs (Newly Industrialised Countries) folloing the general trend towards smaller population growth as education and standard of living rises.

A rather redundant video, and a surprise to see it on this blog. Is there any reason for this?

Well it’s from a Christian (Catholic?) website. It’s true that the “population panic” is over, but the real purpose of the website relates to attitudes towards ‘family planning’, contraception and abortion etc. The actual content with respect to global food supplies etc. is infantile, but the tone and underlying message is pleasingly ‘pro-life’. Hence it shows up a lot on the Catholic blogosphere.

    Rabit,
This post was meant to be just a fill-in post for yesterday, not a main one. I have no idea why nothing else was posted by the Team.

You say it is redundant – why? It was made 2 or 3 years ago, true, but EWTN (whose link I followed) are currently showing these sort of videos in-between programmes.

The subject of overpopulation may well no longer be a problem for Europe, the US and Japan. In fact we are now noticing a rather worrying decline in figures in some places, and a subsequent ageing of our inhabitants, but it is still very much a current topic in others, especially in third world countries.
Overpopulation propaganda is one of the most polemical issues to come to light just recently, and that these powerful foreign aid organisations use to, one could say, ‘blackmail’ certain countries before offering them their ‘help’! They want to enforce a ruthless programme of sterilisation and abortion, to cut their growth.
It is a scandal, and they are using lies and falsehoods to promote it.

(P.S. I’ve said more or less the same as Jerry above – just using different words!)

You could be psychic. Kathleen. Bishop Bergoglio of Rome S.J. even echoed what was in the video you linked:

Pope Francis went on to say that while current levels of production are sufficient, millions continue to perish from starvation, an act he said was “truly scandalous.” The Holy Father called on the international community to find a way for everyone “to benefit from the fruits of the earth.”

Actually, Toad, frog is quite often in the pot in the Chinese world. I’ve had it in a rice porridge and a a sort of thickish herby soup. Very nutritious. Which reminds me of a story about an old friend of mine.

This foreign friend of mine, whose Chinese language was reasonable, saw “field chicken” on the menu in China once and thought he was rather in the mood for a free range chicken taste experience and so he ordered, with fried rice to be followed with a banana fritter. When the waiter brought a sort of stew with what looked like petite chicken legs in it, my friend remarked that free range chickens in China appeared to be uncommonly small. The waiter replied that Chinese frogs were more or less all this size.

    Food?
This is a commodity marketed globally by Capitolism. Belloc pointed out prophetically the twin arms of Satan Capitolism and Socialism. The irony is we see these two and only these two as the choices placed before the voters in modern Nations.
Belloc pointed out that capitolism came from the Reformation.
What has this to do with Food? Well the supply and demand and transportation of Food is controlled not be Governments but the Markets? But the markets are the hunting ground of capitolism. So we can say that greed and profit (and scarcity drives up prices) is the direct consequence of the Protestant Reformation.
Capitolism and Socialism and the Servile State? True the yoke of Satan. Modern Science and especially the funding for Science comes from Capitolism and Socialism and theirs is an anti Christian agenda!
The Food chain is controlled as is banking, drugs, agriculture, education, health by the siblings of the Protestant Reformation.
Toad’s sickening comment on Ireland “..The Irish potato famine was not simply a natural disaster. It was a product of social causes. ..” “..The inadequacy of relief efforts by the British Government worsened the horrors of the potato famine. Initially, England believed that the free market would end the famine. In 1846, in a victory for advocates of free trade, Britain repealed the Corn Laws, which protected domestic grain producers from foreign competition. The repeal of the Corn Laws failed to end the crisis since the Irish lacked sufficient money to purchase foreign grain…” “..In the spring of 1847, Britain adopted other measures to cope with the famine, setting up soup kitchens and programs of emergency work relief. But many of these programs ended when a banking crisis hit Britain. In the end, Britain relied largely on a system of work houses, which had originally been established in 1838, to cope with the famine. But these grim institutions had never been intended to deal with a crisis of such sweeping scope. Some 2.6 million Irish entered overcrowded workhouses, where more than 200,000 people died. ..”
Capitolism!! THE FREE MARKET AND THE SLAVERY OF WORKHOUSES!
Right now anybody who believes that Free market and either Socialism or Capitolism can solve the Food crisis is living ijn cloud cuckoo land.
Over population was never the problem! Greed and avarice are the problem.

On the contrary, when you found the potatoes spoilt, you swore, you took the name of my Son in vain. They will continue to decay, so that by Christmas there will be none left. ..”
The Irish Potato Famine? NO Ireland was part of England. They were exporting wheat and crops from Ireland whilst people died of Hunger. Capitalism the reason for the clearing of the Highlands!
Capitalism as Belloc pointed out flows from the Reformation. Man’s inhumanity to Man (Hatred) there is the cause of Famines!
Of course there isn’t a food shortage! But food is tied into borrowing and profit and market prices. Markets are the hunting ground for speculation and monopoly. The Irish were the victims yes BUT the Free Market killed them!
The same Market Forces!! created the financial debt bubble (fiat money) and through the power of money.
The Financial History of the Dutch Republic (and the seeking for profit!!) flowed from the Reformation. In Ireland the dependency upon the potato was because of the Free Market policies that flowed from the Reformation.
In England the true Crown (it even calls itself the Crown) is the City! May Our Lord use the whip upon these money changers (Capitalists).
New World Order (including the Russian Revolution which was funded by Wall Street and Zurich) and its so called Free Markets are the cause of misdistribution of resources Globally.

The famine had three main causes.

1.) A peasant population pushed onto marginal land and reliant on a single crop.

    2.) The blight.

3.) The official response directed from London. which included allowing corn to rot rather than release it and risk distorting prices.

“A Government which repudiates its foreign debts cannot expect to receive credit.”
Aren’t we hearing this ALL right now and in Europe???

The Famine in Russia 1920’s ?

“..How is it that in the year of grace 1921, with the corn-bins of the most Christian countries full to bursting and with farmers going bankrupt for lack of a market to sell their grain; with the factories of the world lying idle to relieve the glut of overproduction during the war, and as a result of this hundreds of thousands of unemployed men and women walking the streets of all the great metropoli in search of work; with great ships congesting every port and empty trains running across each continent; with Christian preachers thundering the Ten Commandments and proselytizing the heathen to worship their God of Love and Human Kindness—with all this, and more, how is it that starving Russia is not fed and supplied with the essential materials that will enable her next year to help herself? Truly, it is an enigma, since by so doing the paralysis of overproduction and unemployment that cripple the Christian world would find immediate relief.

“But who is to pay?” asks the twentieth century business man, who prays every Sunday in church for forgiveness for the week’s transgressions. “The Bolsheviks are bankrupt; they have abolished private property, and the famine is their punishment. Let them suffer until they change their ideas or their government.”

The capitalist governments consulted together when the call for help went forth a year ago—when there was still enough food to keep the terror-stricken population until relief should arrive; when the hot sun still shone on the blighted fields, and water and railways were open to transport all the help that could be sent. The Supreme Economic Council of the League of Nations deliberated; the Premiers and Presidents of the world’s great powers held weighty conclaves, and the sum total of their decisions was that neither help nor credit could be extended to a Government which repudiated its foreign debts. ..”

    CAPITOLISM, n.

An ironic reference to fierce free marketers turning into slaves of the United States Congress. The U.S. banking industry, once a fierce defender of Capitalism, now makes business decisions based, not on market forces, but on dictates from the U.S. Capitol, which has given it literally hundreds of billions of dollars in bailouts to save it from the subprime mortgage crisis.

I strongly doubt ‘the soul’ knows anything at the moment of creation. And I’m pretty sure the idea that it does ‘know’ things at that moment is not orthodox Christian dogma.
None of us can ‘know’ anything until we’re conscious. And some people go through life never knowing anything.
But Roger and I clearly differ on this.

When I was 22, I ‘knew’ quite a lot about quite a lot of things. (or thought I did.) Now, at 72, I know virtually nothing about practically anything. Still that’s progress. of a sort.

We humans don’t ‘know’ each other at all. We know about each other. We don’t know other animals. We know stuff about them. Same as they do with us.
We don’t ‘know’ God exists. We merely know that we believe God exists. In fact we are certain that we believe this, some of us, anyway.

Adam didn’t have a Teacher! We are know different. Even Evolutionists see that species have knowledge sic the eels and sargasso sea! homing pigeons! Man has knowledge of God and this is perfect and is in His Soul!

    Genesis 1
[26] And he said: Let us make man to our image and likeness: and let him have dominion over the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the air, and the beasts, and the whole earth, and every creeping creature that moveth upon the earth.
[27] And God created man to his own image: to the image of God he created him: male and female he created them.

As regards degrees of Perfection? Man through Free Will and Love can grow in knowledge and Perfection that is very clear!
I thank Toad for raising this because Creation gives Man the Free Will to Grow in the knowledge and Love of God. The Evolutionist simply doesn’t have any direction other than that of Self in His genes. To an Evolutionist there is NO Free Will NO Perfection just Blind Evolving change!
I repeat Man knows God through His Soul (can’t be through his Body can it?).

We are all born with some innate knowledge. Even ants. Nobody tells them what to do. They just ‘know.’

The Evolutionists never answer this chosing to apply the blind clockmaker approach which means that Man and woman are different species does it not? I mean haven’t they evolved differently?
Its very clear that Adam was Created with knowledge as was Eve. What knowledge? Well knowledge of God for one thing! knowledge of animals (who were subservient to him) knowledge of whatever was necessary for he Adam as a Creature.

Now lets look at what this means! This world has laws built into it the laws of Fallen Nature! Now if Man chooses to ignore these laws on the basis that God doesn’t exist what will happen?
Remember what La Salette, Loudres, Fatima the Popes the Church etc. etc. have been preaching and teaching about Heaven, Hell , Redemption The Sacraments etc. etc.
Now if Man ignores God and believes that he can do what Babel Did run the world ignoring its Creator What will happen?

“..LONDON (Reuters) – Plants do complex arithmetic calculations to make sure they have enough food to get them through the night, new research published in journal eLife shows.
Scientists at Britain’s John Innes Centre said plants adjust their rate of starch consumption to prevent starvation during the night when they are unable to feed themselves with energy from the sun.
They can even compensate for an unexpected early night.
“This is the first concrete example in a fundamental biological process of such a sophisticated arithmetic calculation,” mathematical modeller Martin Howard of John Innes Centre (JIC) said.
During the night, mechanisms inside the leaf measure the size of the starch store and estimate the length of time until dawn. Information about time comes from an internal clock, similar to the human body clock.
“The capacity to perform arithmetic calculation is vital for plant growth and productivity,” JIC metabolic biologist Alison Smith said.
“Understanding how plants continue to grow in the dark could help unlock new ways to boost crop yield.”

The distinction between Body. Spirit and Soul for Man has huge implications because the question is Mans consciousness? Our Lord expressly spoke of the Soul that the worst that could happen to a Man was the Loss of His Soul. Now this is the key question right now this distinction between the World, the Flesh and the Soul.
The materialist and modernist ignores the Soul instead its all about the Flesh the world.
This is the precise danger facing Modern Man that His aspirations are on gaining the whole world! Never a thought about His Soul!

    Matthew 16
26 For what doth it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, and suffer the loss of his own soul? Or what exchange shall a man give for his soul?
    Mark 8
36 For what shall it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, and suffer the loss of his soul?

Just to clarify matters over Man and Adams Flesh (before the Fall) Our Lord is True God and True Man (that is that His Flesh is without Adams Sin!! sic Immaculate Conception).
Now Communion is receiving the Body (sic Flesh without SIN) Blood and Divinity Of Our Lord.
So the Fall Of Adam and Eve and Creation (the Eucharist is a Creation in the hands of the priest) is at the very heart of the Faith.

The distance to the horizon is given by d=1.22 x sqrt(h) where d is in miles and h is height in feet. The higher you are, the further you can see, but the smaller objects will appear at the horizon.

Once their angular size drops below one arc minute, they will not be visible. If atmospheric conditions are poor, then resolving power will be less.

So I await the wisdom of John Henry and Toad perhaps they would care to explain the miracle of the Fatima!

The greatest miracle which is completely outside of the explaination of science is the Eucharist. Consider that God is One in three persons. That Our Lord is True God and True Man the hypostatic union. Consider that the Eucharist is the real presence Body. Blood ,Soul and Divinity of Our Lord. Divinity means One God three persons! Body and Blood means without the stain of original Sin. Where God is is Heaven so what does this tell you about the Eucharist?

Seers, Prophets and Visions. Its an interesting and fascinating area. The Garbandal seers were subject to quite extrodinary tests and examinations. So did they or did they not see Our Lady? If Bernadette could see the Lady why couldn’t the crowd watching her? Same with Fatima at the Childens view of Hell! Your examples are off course Visions. When Matthew wrote of Our Lords Temptation by Satan WHERE DID the writer get His information from? In fact so much of the Bible is the witness of a select small few.

Flat world? The Bible never says this. As for past or former opinons Flat world has NEVER be a Dogma of the Church!

Dan. 4:10-11 is Nabuchodonosor’s dream it is a Vision interpreted by Daniel. Just as Emmerich had visions.
Matt. 4:8 Challoners Notes [8] shewed him: That is, pointed out to him where each kingdom lay; and set forth in words what was most glorious and admirable in each of them. Or also set before his eyes, as it were in a large map, a lively representation of all those kingdoms.
Rev. 7:1 Again this is St Johns Vision
Our Lord spoke in parables to confuse the Wise and foolish. The Bible uses metaphors and signs and symbols. Johns vision is very important .

Lets get back to Toads sneers at the Age of the Earth. The issue is of course fundamental because of the link from Our Lord and Our Lady (Immaculate Conception) back to Adam and Eve. Because Immaculate Conception means without Original Sin which is the Sin of Adam and Eve. The genealogy of the Bible is most precise over this and for very good reason of course.
Adam and Eve explains the need for the Passion of Our Lord (which was fortold millenium before) . If Men are not the siblings of Adam and Eve then the Passion and the Eucharist and the lives of the Saints including St Pio are myths. Because this would mean that Our Lord didn’t die for ALL men!
    .
    Luke 3
[23] And Jesus himself was beginning about the age of thirty years; being (as it was supposed) the son of Joseph, who was of Heli, who was of Mathat,
    etc.. to
[38] Who was of Henos, who was of Seth, who was of Adam, who was of God.

    Paul says
    1 Corinthians 15
[45] The first man Adam was made into a living soul; the last Adam into a quickening spirit.

So like it or not you have a lineage (and ages) from Christ back to Adam (5199 from the martyrology) and from Christ to now is 2013 years. So you have a huge problem with your Faith if you deny the lineage of Man back to Adam and Eve

There are some very good Creationst Scientists Out there and a Great many glossed over issues. For example there is considerable evidence for Catastrophes on the Earth. Old rocks on top of Young rocks for instance. Fossils (which have to be formed by catastrophe because carcasses either rot or are devoured) are found of animals that would never be found together. As you well know the Sphinx has water wear at its base. The evidence is actually of a young Earth but I leave this to you to investigate.

Whoever built it had to have a superior knowledge of construction techniques that far surpasses what we have now. Notwithstanding, there are many examples in the construction, that a superior knowledge of the universe, and of the earth, are incorporated into the building and it’s measurements. ..” Yes thats right SUPERIOR KNOWLEDGE to today!!

That complex at Giza including the Sphinx (which points to the Flood by the way) built with SUPERIOR KNOWLEDGE!! By the way the carbon dating goes awry
“..Since 1947, scientists have reckoned the ages of many old objects by measuring the amounts of radioactive carbon they contain. New research shows, however, that some estimates based on carbon may have erred by thousands of years. ..”
In some cases its way off the mark! Now the Pyramids are how Old?
“..Many people are under the false impression that carbon dating proves that dinosaurs and other extinct animals lived millions of years ago. What many do not realize is that carbon dating is not used to date dinosaurs.
The reason? Carbon dating is only accurate back a few thousand years. So if scientists believe that a creature lived millions of years ago, then they would need to date it another way.
But there is the problem. They assume dinosaurs lived millions of years ago (instead of thousands of years ago like the bible says). They ignore evidence that does not fit their preconceived notion.
What would happen if a dinosaur bone were carbon dated? – At Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Scientists dated dinosaur bones using the Carbon dating method. The age they came back with was only a few thousand years old.
This date did not fit the preconceived notion that dinosaurs lived millions of years ago. So what did they do? They threw the results out. And kept their theory that dinosaurs lived “millions of years ago” instead.
    This is common practice.
They then use potassium argon, or other methods, and date the fossils again.
They do this many times, using a different dating method each time. The results can be as much as 150 million years different from each other! – how’s that for an “exact” science?
They then pick the date they like best, based upon their preconceived notion of how old their theory says the fossil should be (based upon the Geologic column).
So they start with the assumption that dinosaurs lived millions of years ago, then manipulate the results until they agree with their conclusion.
Their assumptions dictate their conclusions. .. ”
So a dinosaur a few thousand years ago!!

“..Carbon dating is a good dating tool for some things that we know the relative date of. Something that is 300 years old for example. But it is far from an exact Science. It is somewhat accurate back to a few thousand years, but carbon dating is not accurate past this. Thirty thousand years is about the limit. However, this does not mean that the earth is 30 thousand years old. It is much younger than that.
Because of the earth’s declining magnetic field, more radiation (which forms C14) is allowed into the earth’s atmosphere.
Willard Libby (December 17, 1908 – September 8, 1980) and his colleagues discovered the technique of radiocarbon dating in 1949. Libbey knew that atmospheric carbon would reach equilibrium in 30,000 years. Because he assumed that the earth was millions of years old, he believed it was already at equilibrium. However each time they test it, they find more c14 in the atmosphere, and have realized that we are only 1/3 the way to equilibrium.
    – What does this mean? It means that based on c14 formation, the earth has to be less than 1/3 of 30,000 years old. This would make the earth less than 10,000 years old!
Carbon dating is based on the assumption that the amount of C14 in the atmosphere has always been the same. But there is more carbon in the atmosphere now than there was 4 thousand years ago.
Since carbon dating measures the amount of carbon still in a fossil, then the date given is not accurate. Carbon dating makes an animal living 4 thousand years ago (when there was less atmospheric carbon) appear to have lived thousands of years before it actually did. ..”

The point is that there has to be a direct lineage from Our Lord to Adam otherwise Our Lord wouldn’t be a True Man! That is why the lineage is in the Bible!
Just think a creative Act (including a complete Universe) by God who is outside of Time can be at any moment in Time. Any model of the Solar system must include the Galaxy (milky way!)
