Looking rather like a combat-womble-with-attitude, the noble mole is in fact harmless
Moles spend most of their life underground, and only become newsworthy when they surface, with much mess, in the middle of a pristine lawn in some pleasant English country garden.
Moles are in fact Catholic, and their subterranean lifestyle is wholly approved by the Holy See. They are the submarines of terra firma, in the Latin Rite.
They spend their lives shovelling dirt, destroying wurrums and being dark, warm-blooded, furry, and having limited senses above ground. They just love the earth.
Next time a mole visits your garden, try not to end its life. Instead, try and turn its earthwork into a garden feature. You will entertain Angels unawares, if you do.

Yes, the mole, apart from making molehills is fairly innocuous. But without the earthworms which they eat, the soil would be much impoverished. Worms aerate the soil, and pull down leaves and petals, enriching the earth. Without worms the land would be seriously impaired and we all would suffer.
My lesson from this is that though the mole seems harmless, it’s all relative if I may use that word. If you’re a worm you might not love the mole. However, if we are tolerant of beasts like the mole as you wisely advocate, it will all work out in the evolutionary end. That’s why I want to be tolerant of mole-like dissent, difference and also heresy. For if my faith is strong enough it will prevail. It is not afraid of the other voice.

Is there not a duty to protect those whose faith has not yet matured to be as strong as yours? What about young children being taught heresy and dissent in school? Do you tolerate that sort of mole-like activity?

We all want to encourage children to think and discuss – you too, I sincerely hope. They will see the various sides of issues and make the right choices. How could they do otherwise? If we don’t encourage them to think they are terribly disadvantaged, aren’t they? They would become like Muslims chanting/memorising the Koran by rote, bowing and bobbing, without an original thought in their heads.
And surely you will agree, that Faith/Truth fears nothing and that it will always prevail – (“the gates of hell shall not prevail against it”). Otherwise you are expressing doubts about the truth of your Faith, are you not? And if you hide from dissent, it will rise up and bite you one day, and you won’t know what’s hit you.This has happened catastrophically in the past as you must know. I hope you know.
Incidentally, who teaches “heresy and dissent in school?” And where?

Mimi, good moles keep their young below ground with them, until they are strong enough and wise enough to make their own way in the world. The creatures you refer to are not moles, but something more cold blooded who also live underground.
Gargantua, heresy is toxic to moles, and makes them dance around like eejits, and throw themselves under lawnmowers.

My faith is strong, thank God; I have no doubts whatever as to its truth. My point was simply this: just because you and I and many others have strong faith, this is no reason to tolerate heresy. That is uncharitable to those of weaker faith who might be led astray — and possibly to eternal damnation — by the heretics and dissenters that you are so happy to tolerate.

You insist that the truth of faith will prevail, and I insist that it will only prevail if it is taught, in all its fullness and beauty, without being defaced and deformed by heretics and dissenters. Gosh, I’m just so judgemental today.

A wizened old mole gave me this sage advice the other day:
“Keep your head down, my son, and keep turning the sods”.
And with that, he was gone. He went to rejoin the Velvet Underground, I suppose.
