Those who are stirring to wakefulness as the first rays of the dawning of Christ rouse them, these same are at risk of seeing only the wrappings of the Faith. and missing the hidden gifts within.
Everybody loves a puzzle. We are all curious, and natural problem solvers. When something is obviously valuable but hidden from view, like hidden treasure hinted at on a map with an X, then we are impelled to search for it until we unearth it, remove its containment, and make it our own.
Even dogs (and chimps) get a thrill from wrapped up presents. Their sense of smell tells them that something good lies within the gaudy and meaningless (to them) paper externals. We use our spiritual sense of smell to drive us on regardless of the difficulties and setbacks we encounter on our unwrapping of the Truth.
And so it is with the Faith and the Church. We mustn’t mistake the externals for the precious gift inside, which has our name on. At the same time, I like my presents beautifully and toughly wrapped, and in such a way as to pique my interest.
