POPE FRANCIS FOR YEAR OF MERCY GRANTS THAT SSPX PRIESTS CAN VALIDLY ABSOLVE!

15_09_01_SSPX_livesHuge news. This was under embargo till noon, Rome time, which must be honored. [UPDATE: The Bollettino is now available HERE]

The Year of Mercy begins 8 December 2015 until 20 November 2016.

It is about to be announced that the Holy Father has sent a letter to Archbishop Rino Fisichella, President of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization about the upcoming Extraordinary Year of Mercy.

In this letter the Pope says that he is granting to all priests the faculty to absolve from the sin of abortion.  He writes: “I have decided, notwithstanding anything to the contrary, to concede to all priests for the Jubilee Year the discretion to absolve of the sin of abortion those who have procured it and who, with contrite heart, seek forgiveness for it.”  Interesting way to word it.

He also says that the faithful may go to … well… read it yourself.  Here is a screenshot from the doc:

  1. A friend of mine who wishes the SSPX could be reconciled with Rome says that he almost wept – with happiness – when he read this.

  2. kathleen says:

I’m not surprised, Robert!🙂 This is joyous news indeed.

Papa Francis, I forgive you EVERYTHING! And for calling me and my friends: “rosary counters”, “specialists of the logos”, “pickled pepper-faced Christians”, “fundamentalists”, etc., etc.
It is all forgotten now in your granting these facilities to the long-suffering, faithful, fully-Catholic SSPX priests. Thank you, thank you…

  3. Mimi says:

I sympathise with your joy and delight, Kathleen, but will Pope Francis withdraw these faculties from the Society as soon as the Year of Mercy ends?

  4. 1Hope4All says:

Mimi, from what the Holy Father has said in his statement, this is only for the Year of Mercy.

  5. kathleen says:

Good question Mimi, and 1Hope4All is quite correct that in theory this faculty given to the SSPX [to absolve sins in the Sacrament of Confession for all the Catholic faithful] is only for the ‘Year of Mercy’. However, Fr.Z, in the article linked to above on his blog says:

“if the Holy Father is willing to go this far with the priests of the SSPX, is it hard to imagine that this merciful concession might not be extended beyond the Year of Mercy? I would like to think so!”

    Me too!🙂

The SSPX have now issued a statement about this “huge news” that they, surprisingly, only learnt about through the press!!

“The Society of St. Pius X learned, through the press, of the provisions taken by Pope Francis on the occasion of the upcoming Holy Year. In the last paragraph of his letter addressed September 1, 2015, to Archbishop Rino Fisichella, president of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization, the Holy Father writes:
“I establish that those who during the Holy Year of Mercy approach these priests of the Society of St Pius X to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation shall validly and licitly receive the absolution of their sins.”
The Society of St. Pius X expresses its gratitude to the Sovereign Pontiff for this fatherly gesture. In the ministry of the sacrament of penance, we have always relied, with all certainty, on the extraordinary jurisdiction conferred by the Normae generales of the Code of Canon Law. On the occasion of this Holy Year, Pope Francis wants all the faithful who wish to confess to the priests of the Society of St. Pius X to be able to do so without being worried.
During this year of conversion, the priests of the Society of St. Pius X will have at heart to exercise with renewed generosity their ministry in the confessional, following the example of tireless dedication which the holy Cure of Ars gave to all priests.”

  6. Robert says:

    Where is Our Lady?
Its Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart that is to Triumphant and this is found in Genesis and at Fatima.

  7. geoffkiernan says:

Will his ‘generosity’ extend to the equally loyal Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate and when?

  8. johnhenrycn says:

Well, I love Pope Francis and I’d take a bullet for him. Yes I would. He’s a better man than me. But really – no disrespect – I have to wonder if he’s finally lost the plot. How can he put SSPX priests in such a grossly insulting position and expect them to genuflect in gratitude? Either they’re Catholic priests always able to administer all the sacraments, except Holy Orders, or they’re not.

This is the man who told us fifteen months ago that he would have no problem baptizing Martians. This is the man who told us nine months ago that all animals – even cats apparently – go to heaven. Are these the things that serious, concerned Catholics pant to hear from our Holy Father? Talk about a Ricky Gervais The Vatican Office episode, what?

No, baptized Martians and animals in heaven are things on which silly buggers bloggers like Toad (RIP) and I can opine. But the Vicar of Christ? One can only hope that his upcoming Sanhedrin trial will interfere with the October Synod.

  9. johnhenrycn says:

…but don’t worry too much about His Holiness’s Setember 20th trial: the Jews have far more serious litigation to think about right now, and they’ll probably let him off with a community service order.
