Violence, Viciousness, and Refugees

Catweazle, a refugee from the middle ages, uses a “telling bone” to summon help.

Violence is part of the universe. Nature is full of it. It is inescapable. It is an entropy thing, if you analyse it thermodynamic-ally. Stars collide, atoms split and fuse with enormous energies, predators and prey spill lifeblood everywhere. Violence makes the world go round, you might say.

Even in human society, violence is ever present wherever people are unacquainted with one another, misunderstand one another, or are otherwise divided by tribal loyalties. Only the weak and the meek are non-violent by nature, and they always lose out when the fighting begins, and seems never to end.

Wild violence is something to be fought against and managed at all times and in all places if one one wants more than a caveman’s civilisation. Tame violence, on the other hand,  is the means to this end. By tame violence, I mean the necessary martial actions of a soldier or policeman being brought to bear on an out of control military or social melee. I mean the cutting and clamping of flesh by a surgeon trying to stem bleeding or disease. I mean the shocking of a cataleptic depressive’s brain with electricity to re-enliven them, the disturbing of mediocre mindsets by an artist trying to show them reality as it really is. I mean the tiny wee voice of the child trying to tell the Emperor that he has no clothes on.

Viciousness is the natural state of a man filled with vice, a man of perdition. (Women can be in this state too 😉 ).  Such a person, who has not the Divine Life within them, will gaze upon their world with rapacious lust, greed and personal ambition needing satiation. Think psychopath, sociopath, ruthless, murderous, bastard. Any dubious means is open for achieving their self-justified ends. Such people do exist but are thankfully rare. As rare as Saints at least.

Is it any wonder that the world is full of refugees? Almost all of us are on the run from violence or viciousness in some form or other. There should be solidarity among us, not a spirit of each one for themself. And so we run and run and run….

And our final refuge is the last homely house of all, in the company of the Holy Family.

There, all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be very well. AMEN

Why do we waste time wondering why the world a loving God provided for us to enjoy is so geographically unstable (there is no “safe” piece of land anywhere on planet Earth) – let alone how unspeakably violent and “inhuman,” so many of those Made In His Image are – on a daily basis. No?
No point, really…. I can agree that.

    Dear Toad,

There is one thing about danger that is undeniable:

    It is very exciting!

Too much comfort lulls one into lethargic sleep and ultimately dementia. Catholicism presents its followers with the constant choice of falling into the abyss on either side or continuing to ascend the narrow ridge to Bliss. It really is living on the edge.
