Was Archbishop Lefebvre the Saint Athanasius of our Time???

Perhaps in this centenary year of Our Lady’s apparitions and the miracle of the sun at Fatima, we shall begin to witness the vindication of saintly Archbishop Lefebvre, founder of the Priestly Fraternity of St Pius X (SSPX), protector of Catholic Tradition, Catholic piety and devotions, and most of all, faithful guardian of the holy ‘Mass of the Ages’, a.k.a. the Tridentine Mass. According to Michael Matt of The Remnant in the video below, Lefebvre’s “clueless critics could not be bothered to seriously consider what motivated this man to stand against the revolution in the Church” during the Second Vatican Council! Lefebvre, himself one of the Council Fathers, who stood alone against the infiltration of modernist errors at Vatican II and the whirlwind of destruction in the immediate aftermath, never “left the Church”, as his critics claimed; he stood WITH THE CHURCH and against those who would destroy her. Truly this humble and courageous Archbishop, (as Catholic author Michael Davies and many other prominent Catholics have reaffirmed) is the St Athanasius of our own time.

In the words of Archbishop Lefebvre: “We must maintain the Tradion of the Chuch with confidence in God, confidence in Blessed Virgin Mary, our beloved mother, Mother of God, and we must be sure that one day…. Rome will return to Tradition.”

  1. David O'Neill says:

Although I remain within the Church I have great sympathy with the SSPX & hope that very soon they will again be reconciled with Rome. Pope Benedict tried so hard to attain that reconciliation without success. Whilst I agree with much of what the SSPX stands for we must, IMHO, stay within the Church as Christ promised to be with it even to the consummation of the world. He never did say that He would be with the SSPX.

  2. Michael Matt is right, unfortunately, when he says in the video, “There are some apocalyptic things happening to our Church right now.”

We must, as Cardinal Burke also says in the video, “resist.” We have to stay within the Church and resist as best we can, in whatever way we can.

    @ David O’Neill

Yes, David, I understand what you are saying, that within the One True Church is where we must remain, for only through the Church founded by Christ, and in loyalty to Her, can we find Salvation. The SSPX and their followers would agree absolutely with this.

The SSPX, despite their canonical irregular situation, also profess loyalty to the same Catholic Church. They recognise the Pope as the sole Vicar of Christ on Earth, and abide by all the articles of Faith and Morals taught by the Church throughout the centuries. It is significant that they have retained all the truths of Catholicism, whilst many in the post-V2 Church today are trying to whitewash some of those timeless truths!

Their “separation” (for want of a better word) from the main Body of the Church lies in their inability to accept many of the innovations of V2, and what is often referred to as the ‘Bugnini’ Mass that replaced the beautiful and wholly reverent Tridentine Mass…. as we all well know of course.

But there is growing hope that before too long, and Deo juvante, the difficulties will be overcome, the canonical problems sorted out, and the SSPX will join the main body of Traditional Catholics in the Church once more to continue “the good fight” to correct error and spread the Faith in the whole world. A recent post of ours of an interview with Bishop Schneider hints that this day may not be far off.

  4. Brother Burrito says:

I dearly desire that SSPX becomes reconciled to the Holy Roman Catholic Church, and soon.

Alas, I suspect delays because some of that fraternity are stubborn, awkward old cusses, and then some.

Oh dear, I’ve spoken off the cuff again. Sorry.

  5. Brother Burrito says:

Michael Matt is a self-regarding Tw*t of the highest order in my honest opinion.

I don’t think this comment will see the light of day for long! Sorry.

  6. Tom Fisher says:

    Glad someone said it BB.

No, he’s not! He’s a delightful man, fun loving, intelligent, and full of joy in his Catholic Faith. I have met him a few times on the Chartres pilgrimage where he mucks in with everyone during this most gruelling 105 km. walk, and not at all with a “self-regarding” attitude.

Of course he doesn’t suffer heretics or liberals very well, but there’s plenty of us ordinary traditional Catholics that find those “Tw*ts” hard to stomach! 😉

  8. geoffkiernan says:

Yes Kathleen, Talking about hard to stomach tw*ts….it is rather easy to determine who the tw*ts are in this case and it aint MJMatt… keep fighting the good fight. I told CPS that they would still be with us. Older, ‘smarter’ but sadly not wiser. Still they have their place in the world, its just that your cant keep em locked up in there all day ( insert one smiling face ‘with his Dexter eyelid shut’ – Henry Lawson or Banjo Patterson, cant remember which)

  9. Brother Burrito says:

    Dear Geoff,

Yes I am a tw*t, and not proud of it. We must agree to disagree about Mr Matt.

Fortunately, the Church is big enough for us to co-exist better apart! 😉

(Might one call this unity in opposition?)
