Italian archbishop: Pope Benedict retired due to ‘tremendous pressure’

An Italian archbishop close to Pope Benedict XVI says the former pope decided to resign as a result of “tremendous pressure.”

Archbishop Luigi Negri who says he has visited Pope Benedict “several times” since his resignation in 2013, is the only Italian bishop to have ever participated in the annual pro-life march in Rome. Negri resigned as archbishop of Ferrara-Comacchio in February after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 75.

In an article published Monday by news outlet Rimini 2.0, Archbishop Negri said that while he has little knowledge of the inner workings of the Curia, “I am certain that the truth will emerge one day showing grave liability both inside and outside the Vatican.”

“It is no coincidence that in America, even on the basis of what has been published by Wikileaks, some Catholic groups have asked President Trump to open a commission of inquiry to investigate whether the administration of Barack Obama exerted pressure on Benedict,” he said. It remains shrouded in mystery for now, he said, “but I am sure that those responsible will be found out.”

Concluding the point, he said that as he approaches his death the first question St. Peter will ask him will be “exactly about this issue.”

In his February 11, 2013 speech where he announced his resignation, Pope Benedict XVI cited his deteriorating “strength of mind and body” leading to his “incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted” to him. He noted that he renounced the papacy with “full freedom”

Nevertheless, the resignation, unprecedented in modern history, sent shockwaves throughout the world with a flurry of suggestions that Benedict was forced to resign. The concerns were reinforced by words that Benedict himself said at his own election to pontificate in 2005. At his first Mass as Pope, the Holy Father said, “Pray for me, that I may not flee for fear of the wolves.”

Archbishop Negri was also asked about the dubia of the four Cardinals – Burke, Brandmuller, Caffarra and Meisner – who are seeking a clarification from Pope Francis on Amoris Laetitia.

“Amoris Laetitia needs clarification, unfortunately, the current leader of the Church still remains silent,” he said. “I think that the Holy Father should respond, although he seems to have decided to the contrary.”

“Unfortunately it has unleashed a real hysteria against these four cardinals who were all blamed,” the archbishop said. He called the suggestion of some to remove them from the College of Cardinals “disgusting.”

Those who are normally papal critics, he said, “for a time have become hyper papists for their own ends,” he said.

  1. It is asinine to suggest the President of the USA has the power to decide whether a Pope resigns or continue to serve. I have never heard such foolishness. Any reasonable person who understands the USA government knows that the President is a figurehead. If Barack Obama could not get Israel and Palestine to down and have meaningful dialogue, how on God’s earth he could exert pressure on the Pontiff? It is surprising that supposedly intelligent people can make such asinine statements.

I pray for the leaders of our Church daily! It’s the only way I can help.

  3. Trumps been accused of colluding with Russians, Obama has been accused of tapping the Trump Tower phones. Obama has been accused of orchestrating the Trump-Russia conspiracy, and his administration was caught tapping Merckel’s phone. Why is it hard to accept that Obama tried to influence the Vatican, even to the point of ousting a pope? His prominent Catholic’s are Beiden and Pelosi. Would it be hard to believe that liberal democrat and catholic politicians would influence the nomination of their bishops, who then become cardinals, who do have influence? Who is in alliance more with the Pelosi-Beiden-Obama camp more, Benedict or Francis. Do I believe the story? I don’t know. Do I think it is far fetched or asinine? Absolutely not ! It’s the way things are done these days.

  4. Figus Religiosa says:

I agree (mostly) with Noel. More, the article contains nothing on WHY anyone would pressure the Pope to resign, which is the most important question of all.

Without this information, the article is mere tittle-tattle and idle gossip.

“..Pope Benedict retired due to ‘tremendous pressure..”

    What a serendipitous coincidence!
Like Dear Old Ben, I decided one day, directly after 9/11, that I was heartily sick of the “tremendous pressure,” of daily cataloguing the planet’s interminable idiocies.
Which were boring and horrifying me to stupefaction, after 40-some years.
So I quit – and now live far less unhappily in company with “lesser” animals, such as dogs, cats. and chickens – none of which, apparently – unlike The Magic Christian, Donald Trump – are Made in God’s image.
…Trump is thus fashioned in resemblance to the Almighty, we are instructed. Dogs, tigers, eagles, and horses – even goats – are not,
    Hmm.
Whose company, (dogs, goats, etc., that is, not The Donald) and whose looks, and intellectual company, I vastly prefer. …And defy anyone else not to feel the same.
    Unless you are utterly bonkers.

Meanwhile, CP&S grows more paranoid by the hour.

I’m with northernhermit. For one thing, I do plenty of reading of real news from reliable independent journalists and reporters. Devious underhanded behind-the-scenes tactics and manipulations are ongoing and have been for quite some time. There is nothing asinine or idiotic about believing that SOME globally-minded entity – be it Obama, at the behest of his masters, or another – coerced Benedict’s resignation. To completely rule this out is what is asinine. Are you not aware of all the deceit and downright debauchery that is perpetrated on the public at the hands of governments around the world, with the US being right there at the top?

It would be naive to ignore that there is a powerful gang (or gangs) that have infiltrated the Vatican whose one aim is to impose their ‘New World Order’. We have quite enough information to assert that; they are all part of what is called ‘globalism’, and made up of Free Masons, Communists, members of the ‘Homosexual Lobby’, or just plain Modernists. It certainly must be more than just the homosexuality issue, although I believe that’s part of the ‘population control’ madness that the globalists push. Catholicism, with its unchanging teachings, is their biggest enemy.

They threatened Pope Benedict, forcing him finally to resign the papacy; he knew he hadn’t the strength to combat their sinister plans for this ‘New World Order’! What he couldn’t have known was that they would manipulate the next Conclave to put their candidate in his place!! Pope Francis is now in a hurry to establish a ‘new Catholicism’ that will include everyone, and put all denominations under one big tent.
But two unforeseen setbacks have thwarted the globalists in the working out of their evil plans….

BREXIT… and the now further risk of more countries leaving the EU (though this is of lesser importance),
    AND
The election of conservative, Donald Trump, to the USA Presidency!

    Fie.
“Pope Francis is now in a hurry to establish a ‘new Catholicism’ that will include everyone, and put all denominations under one big tent.”
Perfectly reasonable and laudable idea. No chance of success.
But two unforeseen setbacks have thwarted the globalists in the working out of their evil plans….
BREXIT… and the now further risk of more countries leaving the EU (though this is of lesser importance),
    AND
The election of conservative, Donald Trump to the USA Presidency!”

I don’t see how either event might impinge on plans for “Global Christianity,” or a “new Catholicism,” which both seem like excellent ideas to me.
No doubt, I will be told.
How wonderful to read of “evil plans,” outside of a small boy’s comic.

  9. kathleen says:

Toad, I’m pressed for time this morning, but in answer to your questions, I don’t think I could explain it better than it is done in this Remnant video below of President Donald Trump’s inaugural speech. The blind followers of the New World Order hate him for putting ‘spokes in the wheels’ of their ominous plans to have us tow the politically correct line they lay out!

Much the same goes for BREXIT (i.e., the Brits not wanting to kowtow to everything demanded by the Free Masons and Illuminati that run the EU.)
