Important Proclamation on 850th Anniversary of the Martyrdom of Saint Thomas Becket by President Donald J. Trump

By this courageous proclamation for religious liberty, and using the example of the martyrdom of St Thomas Becket, President Trump is demonstrating to the world that he is a true Christian and unafraid of the secular tyrants attempting to implement an atheistic New World Order.

Issued on: December 28, 2020

Today is the 850th anniversary of the martyrdom of Saint Thomas Becket on December 29, 1170. Thomas Becket was a statesman, a scholar, a chancellor, a priest, an archbishop, and a lion of religious liberty.

Before the Magna Carta was drafted, before the right to free exercise of religion was enshrined as America’s first freedom in our glorious Constitution, Thomas gave his life so that, as he said, “the Church will attain liberty and peace.”

The son of a London sheriff and once described as “a low‑born clerk” by the King who had him killed, Thomas Becket rose to become the leader of the church in England. When the crown attempted to encroach upon the affairs of the house of God through the Constitutions of Clarendon, Thomas refused to sign the offending document. When the furious King Henry II threatened to hold him in contempt of royal authority and questioned why this “poor and humble” priest would dare defy him, Archbishop Becket responded “God is the supreme ruler, above Kings” and “we ought to obey God rather than men.”

Because Thomas would not assent to rendering the church subservient to the state, he was forced to forfeit all his property and flee his own country. Years later, after the intervention of the Pope, Becket was allowed to return — and continued to resist the King’s oppressive interferences into the life of the church. Finally, the King had enough of Thomas Becket’s stalwart defense of religious faith and reportedly exclaimed in consternation: “Will no one rid me of this meddlesome priest?”

The King’s knights responded and rode to Canterbury Cathedral to deliver Thomas Becket an ultimatum: give in to the King’s demands or die. Thomas’s reply echoes around the world and across the ages. His last words on this earth were these: “For the name of Jesus and the protection of the Church, I am ready to embrace death.” Dressed in holy robes, Thomas was cut down where he stood inside the walls of his own church.

Thomas Becket’s martyrdom changed the course of history. It eventually brought about numerous constitutional limitations on the power of the state over the Church across the West. In England, Becket’s murder led to the Magna Carta’s declaration 45 years later that: “[T]he English church shall be free, and shall have its rights undiminished and its liberties unimpaired.”

When the Archbishop refused to allow the King to interfere in the affairs of the Church, Thomas Becket stood at the intersection of church and state. That stand, after centuries of state-sponsored religious oppression and religious wars throughout Europe, eventually led to the establishment of religious liberty in the New World. It is because of great men like Thomas Becket that the first American President George Washington could proclaim more than 600 years later that, in the United States, “All possess alike liberty of conscience and immunities of citizenship” and that “it is now no more that toleration is spoken of, as if it was by the indulgence of one class of people, that another enjoyed the exercise of their inherent natural rights.”

Thomas Becket’s death serves as a powerful and timeless reminder to every American that our freedom from religious persecution is not a mere luxury or accident of history, but rather an essential element of our liberty. It is our priceless treasure and inheritance. And it was bought with the blood of martyrs.

As Americans, we were first united by our belief that “rebellion to tyrants is obedience to God” and that defending liberty is more important than life itself. If we are to continue to be the land of the free, no government official, no governor, no bureaucrat, no judge, and no legislator must be allowed to decree what is orthodox in matters of religion or to require religious believers to violate their consciences. No right is more fundamental to a peaceful, prosperous, and virtuous society than the right to follow one’s religious convictions. As I declared in Krasiński Square in Warsaw, Poland on July 6, 2017, the people of America and the people of the world still cry out: “We want God.”

On this day, we celebrate and revere Thomas Becket’s courageous stand for religious liberty and we reaffirm our call to end religious persecution worldwide. In my historic address to the United Nations last year, I made clear that America stands with believers in every country who ask only for the freedom to live according to the faith that is within their own hearts. I also stated that global bureaucrats have absolutely no business attacking the sovereignty of nations that wish to protect innocent life, reflecting the belief held by the United States and many other countries that every child — born and unborn — is a sacred gift from God. Earlier this year, I signed an Executive Order to prioritize religious freedom as a core dimension of United States foreign policy. We have directed every Ambassador — and the over 13,000 United States Foreign Service officers and specialists — in more than 195 countries to promote, defend, and support religious freedom as a central pillar of American diplomacy.

We pray for religious believers everywhere who suffer persecution for their faith. We especially pray for their brave and inspiring shepherds — like Cardinal Joseph Zen of Hong Kong and Pastor Wang Yi of Chengdu — who are tireless witnesses to hope.

To honor Thomas Becket’s memory, the crimes against people of faith must stop, prisoners of conscience must be released, laws restricting freedom of religion and belief must be repealed, and the vulnerable, the defenseless, and the oppressed must be protected. The tyranny and murder that shocked the conscience of the Middle Ages must never be allowed to happen again. As long as America stands, we will always defend religious liberty.

A society without religion cannot prosper. A nation without faith cannot endure — because justice, goodness, and peace cannot prevail without the grace of God.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim December 29, 2020, as the 850th anniversary of the martyrdom of Saint Thomas Becket. I invite the people of the United States to observe the day in schools and churches and customary places of meeting with appropriate ceremonies in commemoration of the life and legacy of Thomas Becket.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-eighth day of December, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-fifth.

  1. I always loved the story of Saint Thomas Beckett a wonderful priest/disciple of Jesus Christ and the “man” in History; for his Great love of God were obvious and powerful as truth came through his voice and actions in that time when the corrupted “establishment” and King Henry II was against him for being so honest and bold about what is right and what is wrong when so many would not! What is more fitting now; than to have our Great President Donald J. Trump make this proclamation to the world and speak in this same way that Thomas Beckett spoke in his time; while likewise the modern day corrupted “establishment” is attacking and telling President Trump to shut-up and do as he is told by the tyrants and greedy of our time now! This man Trump who since he was elected President in 2016 has had every conceivable insult and weaponized accusation hurled at him along with outrageous lies and fabricated myths in one witch hunt after another to destroy him! I know from some personal experiences that this man is in office because God anointed him for this position in a most unprecedented time, and, that is why the forces of hell itself through the most nefarious corrupted individuals in our US government are doing all they can to bring him down; these antichrist’s!
Thank God President Trump is so faithful to Jesus Christ and our Father in heaven having the stamina, wisdom and deep love of God and country to go the distance like a heavy weight prize fighter, the likes of which this Nation hasn’t seen in ages! Thank you for this recognition and affirmation of what I knew already, but, by paying this tribute to these two great men one in the ancient past and one who is with us now, because, this is very inspiring to me and I know this accounting will do so much good in reaching the hearts and minds of many to see TRUTH; God’s TRUTH!

  2. Thanks Lawrence! I was so impressed by Trump’s speech and actions on this occasion that I was speechless! All I could manage in response to the news was “wow”. I still am in amazement! And I’m rarely- if ever- speechless, as my husband and mother will trustily proclaim! Ha ha (true).

  3. RemnantchildofMary; or yes Wow do I agree! One of my all-time favorite historical figures and especially of the church during the Middle Ages! Funny how his article tied in perfectly to this; “It is because of great men like Thomas Becket that the first American President George Washington could proclaim more than 600 years later that, in the United States, “All possess alike liberty of conscience and immunities of citizenship” and that “it is now no more that toleration is spoken of, as if it was by the indulgence of one class of people, that another enjoyed the exercise of their inherent natural rights.” Actually when Trump was elected President in 2016 one of my sisters and I were talking about Trump and how he reminds us so much of George Washington for very good reasons! Some of that is correlated well here! Thank God for these truths and insights! Amen.

  4. RemnantchildofMary,
I’m sure your husband and mother see you that way, as I can understand why; you are very dedicated and insightful yourself! Being amazed and at a loss for words in some instances is a very good thing because I believe that is a chance and even a message sometimes to take it all in and ten see what the inspiration means to you. I tend to jump in and not always a good idea but I’m emotional and sensitive which was happening as I read this elegant and provocative article I was actually tearing up and feel pain from it; but, I’m different than you and many people in that I’ve fought through some battles with nefarious persons in government and the church was involved; so this was personal in a way! My battle wasn’t anything as monumental as Thomas Becket’s or President Trump’s which were and are earth shaking situations; but, I was attacked and could have died while I fought for years to survive in the battle from physical insult that resulted and mentally it was crushing to bear the animosity and jealous hate directed at me; which to me can only come from the Devil through his minions on earth! I’m definitely no saint but though I’ve sinned and not done all I could for God I grew up a good boy and caring brother; that good soul remained intact all my life never ever becoming a brute and certainly I could never come close to being a tyrant if I even was given the opportunity, as its squarely not in my nature, as I do love Jesus enough to know that would be the ruin of me! But, I can also say I have actual experiences that help me to directly identify with these two great men whom I love for being so strong and Godly! Like my Dad always was too and I’m a guy that wishes I could be just like them! To imitate Jesus Christ more and better than I have; not perfect but bolder and more courageous which I see they all did! Something for me to aim for! Thank you for helping to inspire here!
    God bless you and yours.

Wow! Trump is more Catholic than JFK. It wouldn’t surprise me if he converts during his second term, or maybe soon thereafter.

When, this past summer, everybody and their uncle were taking a knee to black supremacy, President Trump dropped onto both knees before the shrine of Saint JPII. When you add to this, his unprecedented support for the Pro-life movement, Trump could be considered more Catholic than JFK. Certainly more Catholic than your average bishop. – I wouldn’t be surprised if Trump converts during his second term, or perhaps soon after it.

There’s nothing Catholic about religious liberty. The American Republic owes it’s existence far more to usurpers and enemies of the Church like Henry II than to Defenders of the Faith like St. Thomas who died fighting against those who would separate Church from State and demote religion to a private affair, which is precisely what the Constitution of Clarendon sought to do.

You people are cheering for a perversion of St. Thomas’ legacy by a liberal ideology that is repugnant to God.

  10. I take seriously your attack upon my Nation and Catholicism; and you sir are the fraud!
Liberal ideology in a pig eye! Are you an American? If you live within this Great Nation under God then you are choosing to pervert what it means to be an American, like many are doing today including the communist sympathizers like say Bernie Sanders who has no business being in America let alone call himself an American! He had his honeymoon in communist Russia and should have stayed there but why didn’t he? Because it rots compared to being here where you can be actually free not a minion of a totalitarian mindset government with a dictator former KBG gulag mindset murderer named Putin!
Enemies that are right here in our midst whether illegals, or so called citizens that are crazed and blinded by liberalism, socialism or communism, I tell you now that you will all be defeated for acts of treason! There has been a destructive evil working against America for some decades, but that is going to be stopped. This Nation under God will prevail and beat down all its enemies by virtue of God’s blessings being bestowed upon those that will defend “America’s Constitution, Christian Heritage,” the “Founding Fathers Original Spirit and Intent” that dwells within those words of the Constitution, along with following the will of that same God that brought forth to this continent these United States of America! These few statements and letters from a handful of our Forefathers should put to rest what their positions and mind-set was during the drafting of our US Constitution and how they saw the Birth of America, and what the intent was for its continuance by “Virtue of that One Almighty Power” by which America was Born and would Sustain Itself!

The mere Politician, equally with the pious man, ought to respect and to cherish them. @ E M Lowden,

“ There’s nothing Catholic about religious liberty.”

Most certainly there is only ONE TRUE religion and only ONE TRUE Church founded by Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God. This is the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church.
Therefore all other so-called religions are false, although Christian (Protestant) churches, of which there are thousands, retain, in varying degrees, some elements of truth in their teachings. Non-Christian belief systems and sects are heretical and some are even satanical.

However, the sense in which the term “religious liberty” is being used in the article above is not contradictory to what the Church has always taught. Instead it is a call for Christians who are being persecuted for their Faith by secularists, communists and fanatics both at home in our own Western Nations, and abroad under totalitarian regimes, to have the liberty to practice their Faith.

That, I believe, is what President Trump is saying, and using a martyred Saint of Medieval times as an example for us to follow. IOW, God, Church and God’s Law above all secular demands… even at the cost of our lives.

  12. Kathleen… this was perfectly stated as to the definitive intention and heart felt message President Trump was making to the world. I’m really aggravated by Monday morning armchair quarterbacks as the saying goes; who are quick to criticize and putdown valiant noble efforts by others who carry a much heavier societal burden as well as responsibility on their backs in a valiant attempt to make a difference of great value and purpose in this horribly tumultuous world in a most unprecedented time of great suffering and sin; even being a world heading to hell in a hand basket! But, yet these nay Sayers are the last to offer any substantive remedies to the world or speak for God if at all! I can only say to me these are rabble-rouse minions of the darkness and they better take care because our God above is taking account of all human actions or inaction’s as this is a test as well as an opportunity! Thank you very much for clarifying this article’s value and perspective especially in regard to President Trump’s point about the “martyred Saint of Medieval times as an example for us to follow!” I’ve read that great leaders or men and women of God, like martyrs for example, would never ask you to do something they themselves aren’t willing or prepared to do themselves; and in my eyes President Trump talking about martyrs is very appropriate because no President in America’s history aside from Abraham Lincoln one of my all-time most favorite historical figures, a man of great virtue; has ever taken on the abuse, hatred, attacks, knavery, slanders and misery directed at President Trump and his entire family from day one of his presidency, showing no respect to him or the office he holds; all the while still being under the pressure of having to be the Commander in Chief of the Great United States of America, like he has had to deal with; which to me is a true test of his character and love of God Almighty! Picture any one of the horrible people or even lost souls that have been relentless since 2016 in tearing him apart like Pelosi, Schumer, Schiff and any of those sort while having to be under the pressure Trump has been and still do a great job of leading a Nation upward nonetheless! None of them could even get to first base they would buckle up and fall by the wayside or go insane! It’s truly unbelievable to me how there are so many twisted evil minded and cold heartened human beings in this world and especially many of them in positions of huge responsibility to the public they are supposed to serve, but they fail in all regards being self-serving loathsome despots! This is a sign of the times for sure and everyone better hear me now; wake up and pray like you never have, this is very, very serious way over the top trouble now, and time could be running out! Amen.

Thanks Lawrence, and apologies for taking a while to reply.
As I am not an American myself, and you as an American had already responded in detail to the commentator who had unjustly attacked the American Founders, I preferred to clarify only that “Religious Liberty” accusation he aimed at us.

In fact it is true that progressives (Modernists) often use the term “Religious Liberty” to push forward their call for the right to a mish-mash of all religions existing, denying that any one religion is superior to another. This we know is a lie. The Catholic Church alone in Her doctrines and dogmas professes the fullness of Truth! But President Trump (a Presbyterian I believe, but one who harbours real Catholic sentiments) was talking to the whole Nation, even the whole world, so obviously his call for religious liberty was not contradicting Catholic teachings. It was only aimed at defending Christians and criticising the overwhelming persecution Christians suffer at the hands of our many enemies.

  14. Hi Kathleen… and delays are totally understandable! But your further input here in regard to the attack by a rabble-rouse person; what I tend to call anarchists which many times are also even antichrists and basically wolves in sheep’s clothing claiming to have some understanding and interest in free democratic society and real genuine Christian teachings from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, but, such persons are none of these things nor actually have a genuine belief in them. There are many in the world today that are attempting to destroy traditional tried and tested truthful teachings handed down over the millennia to guide the human race to God and his full plan of salvation for those who will listen and believe. As a prime example of this mishmash of doctrines and prophecy going on; as you know it was done by Mohammad who took the Old Testament teaching from God and along with concocted falsehoods and lies of his own; in order lead astray others and to profess that Islam is God’s only religion and all others are infidels! These people today that do all this attacking to me are on that same wavelength and as you may recall from some of my blog writings I did have such a person attack me on another media platform Christmas day a few years ago, actually trying to ruin my Christmas celebratory spirit and I had no choice but to rebut him out of my primary concern for the reading audience with all the truth and facts I could muster before blocking him. Evil takes many forms and looks for any place to cause trouble or misery, so we all need to remain ever vigilant that these type of enemies of our Lord and indeed all of we faithful; are throughout the world! I again really appreciate your lending such expertise to this foul attempt to disrupt what up to that point was a wonderful experience reading first the article and then any of the fine commentary afterwards. I’m always available and seeking to do God’s will as I lend a hand in order to be of any service in fostering the truth and knowledge that all of you at Catholicism Pure provide so beautifully and consistently! All of it is a great help to me and very inspiring; as I seek to do God’s will! I can’t say enough how great a job you do! Oh, I was told by an attorney I’ve become acquainted with from my recent writing submission for a group letter she sponsored to the President; who works in the Washington, D.C. area, and she told me that President Trump has requested and set up a complete Catholic daily mass at the White House which I need to ask her about further on Twitter, because I can understand why he would want to do that, but another primary reason may be that the First Lady Melania wanted it done too, considering her religious upbringing. I’ll be sure to keep you posted of any important information of interest that I may become aware of in this regard. I’m confident in my faith that more blessings are headed our way here in the States and there where you are because of our Catholic faith and God’s plans unfolding before our eyes! God bless you and yours along with all who help Catholicism Pure to accomplish so much good!
