Judgement and The ‘Little’ Sins

By Richard Maffeo at Catholic 365:

Here is a warning by the Lord Jesus that no one should gloss over:

“And He was passing through from one city and village to another, teaching, and proceeding on His way to Jerusalem. And someone said to Him, “Lord, are there just a few who are being saved?” And He said to them, “Strive to enter through the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able. Once the head of the house gets up and shuts the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock on the door, saying, ‘Lord, open up to us!’ then He will answer and say to you, ‘I do not know where you are from.’ Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets’; and He will say, ‘I tell you, I do not know where you are from; depart from Me, all you evildoers.’ In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but yourselves being thrown out.” (Luke 13:22-28)

Hardly a time goes by when I read this text that I don’t wonder how it can be that some who faithfully attend Mass or worship services, and who even routinely receive Holy Communion, how they can be so surprised at the Judgment when they are cast away from the Lord.

But the more I reflect on that text and on my question, the more unlikely I think it will be for anyone to be surprised at the judgment IF – IF they have purposely sought the Holy Spirit to open their eyes to their sins. Certainly, we want to know about our ‘big’ sins, but we should never gloss over the ones WE consider ‘little.’ And to simply make a general confession to God along the lines of, “I have sinned in what I have done and what I have failed to do” – and not actually NAME those sins – is to risk sliding into a nonchalance about those sins.

Listen to St Augustine on the subject: “While he is in the flesh, man cannot help but have at least some light sins. But do not despise these sins which we call “light”: if you take them for light when you weigh them, tremble when you count them.

A number of light objects makes a great mass; a number of drops fills a river; a number of grains makes a heap.” Hear also St. Teresa of Avila: “. . . [H]ave such a fixed determination not to offend the Lord that you would rather lose a thousand lives, and be persecuted by the whole world, than commit one venial sin.”

And St Francis of Assisi: “Had I committed but one little sin I would have ample reason to repent of it for the rest of my life.”

The mature Christian, the one who sincerely desires to live a holy lifestyle before a holy God, will daily seek the Holy Spirit’s light to shine on his or her sins so those sins can be confessed and turned from.

No one wants to be woefully surprised at the Judgment. It will not have mattered on that final day how often we attended Mass, or how often received holy Communion, or how much money we have given to the Church and to her work. What will matter to God is how we sought to live a holy life and lifestyle. Routine confession and repentance of sin – the big ones and the little ones – will help ensure we are not cast away from His holy Presence.

  1. Very good and wise to bring this out from our Lord who still working to inspire those that listen and want to change before it is too late!

I’ve said before far too many are going to HELL! You all got that now or are you still too busy playing games with other people on the net or with yourselves to be praying diligently from your deepest heart in total supplication, or to be concerned about what wrath you are bringing upon this fallen world that Jesus Christ came down from heaven to give us one big opportunity to save our sorry asses through Him taking our punishment paid forward, but I see far too many who don’t give a flying leap and so carry on like the disgusting maggot rot that they are, lying to themselves and living in SIN!

They will get what’s coming to them and gnashing of teeth doesn’t even describe the half of it; it will be so horrible and beyond human imagination to be in Hell for Eternity but some obviously want to take their chances and take it so they can do what they please now! Look at our leaders and others how disgustingly evil and corrupted they live, without batting an eyelash and actually feel puffed up and proud of what they are! Time to get your act together or pack up your sorry butts for the hell ride coming!

Here is something I wrote moments ago so take it for what is worth to you and think about it anyway!

  2. Sorry for the duplication error I made!

  3. Sorry but after more thought about this fine posting and the wealth of insight it provides I realized part of what I’ve been trying to say here and in a couple of other locations comes down to what I saw last year and wrote in this blog posting which I’m leaving for anyone who might take the time to check it out. Most of a comment left on another site pertains here also so here it is.

Jesus promised He would not let go of holding our right hand to lead us through the worst of times and the best of them! But the difficult fact for me now is how shameful and disgusting the world is around me and that is not an easy cross to bear; for any of His own! Sure we can hold fast to the power He gave and gives us through the Holy Spirit the Comforter! But, as the book of Revelation tells us in the End Time if that time were not cut short even His elect would fall prey to the deceptions and misery that would be coming upon the earth!

My point I think for this dissertation or bringing this all up is not to be sugar coating anything anymore; there is no time for that and that has been part of the problem with even Christians trying to give the good vibe a boost or even deluding themselves, but, the truth is we have all been failing to do enough of the work needed in society and in our own personal lives for things to have gotten this bad, taking the nearest exit ramps whenever possible. Like mom always said talk is cheap and dad said put your money where your mouth is, to back up what you say with action, and as I see it too many people give way too much empty lip service and that bothers me a lot!

This internet is very much a tool of sloughing off and pretending by talking and chewing the cud but doing diddly; it can too easily become a mesmerizing tool and I’ve experienced where it can pull a person into spending countless hours, say akin to or like people do in casinos pulling a lever on a one armed bandit, going in circles; not doing the work, but being diverted from it; this is how personal responsibility can vaporize! That is why I say not cutting the mustard is a huge problem! In a war, sometimes in one battle the difference is found or made in the end by making the necessary push to break through and not be overcome!

So the clever deceptions and lies of the enemy right now are going to kill and devour many more fools and I am the counterbalance if I want to do the work, telling anyone wake up and even giving a kick in the ass when needed; perhaps not any sugar coating on their favorite topics or games! I see way too many people mesmerized on here and playing many silly losing games and that is not good, so I say what I must, and sure I can turn my back on the whole lot; which I actually thought of doing lately and especially last night but then I say to myself am I a quitter or am I a warrior for God! I think you know what the answer is or has to be I ‘m sure!

You know how its said the more things change the more they stay the same; well last year seems liker its now too; only not quite the same but getting worse by the day!

    Brother in Christ Jesus,
